Is social media worth pursuing?

I never signed up with Twitter because it is useless for most businesses, and while I joined Facebook to connect with family/friends, I concluded that it is not only a waste of time (as much I love my family/friends, honestly, I don’t care if my niece is having coffee at Starbucks), privacy is a big issue (and that comes from someone who writes 100s of articles each month and makes a very comfortable living online). However, considering the number of people on Facebook, I did test its utility for marketing a website and I have to confess that the MyNippon Facebook page has been a success. That is why I am suggesting that you watch this video that has some useful stats showing that social media may not be a fad.

Hey J can you tell me a little bit more about why you think social media is not worth pursuing. I own an online business and have made a decent amount of leads using social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Linked. J but your right it is useless for most businesses, but its because they are not equipped with the right techniques and knowledge on how to pursue and gain leads without spamming their links ;)

Rudy, I admire your success using these tools, but as you said yourself, they don’t work for everyone. I have heard that some airlines have had a lot of success on Twitter and a lot of brands have built successful fan pages on Facebook, but to the best of my knowledge the business that they generate is a drop in the bucket, compared to customers they get from advertising.
