“View from the top” – Lessons
I consider Gwyneth Paltrow to be a fine actress and still cannot laughing at Christina Applegate’s acting in “Married with children.” So it was no surprise that I opted to watch “View from the top.” With a tag line as catchy as “Don’t stop till you reach the top,” it is a movie that reflects the story of each one of us making our way through life and through corporate America.
Briefly, here is the story. Paltrow is a small-town girl and sees that being a flight attendant may be her only hope of getting out and doing something with her life. During her training at a fictitious airline (and my praise for the producers for coming up with an airline that only exist in movies – just look at what is happening to real airlines), her roommate, Applegate, cheats her way to plum assignments, while Paltrow gets stuck in Cincinnati. Eventually, it all works out and she gets a great job and great husband. The movie is funny at times and you wouldn’t regret watching it on DVD.
So what did I learn from it?
-
You have to play politics even at the bottom of the pyramid. If you choose not to, you may get hurt. There is no place in corporate America for nice guys and girls.
-
Success in life depends on hunger and drive. Hunger is a strong desire to achieve something and drive is the energy level to achieve it. Get both.
- Next time you are on the plane, be nice to the flight attendants. They have a tough job to do and you have no right to make life even more difficult for them.
