Child malnutrition in India

Vogue is going to India. Other luxury fashion houses are setting up shop in the country, but the country is still among the poorest in the world.

The Indians have a very different definition of poverty, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we applied our standards, some 90% of the people live below the poverty line (though there is a separate report that says that the number of millionaires — in US dollars — is growing at a fast rate). According to this video report, child malnutrition in India is among the worst in the world. The big problem is not that things are so bad for these poor kids, but that the so-called “elites” who are driving the country’s growth engine are so clueless and careless about its problems. A few months ago I was invited to meet the director of one of India’s elite educational institutions (Indian Institute of Technology or IIT) and this arrogant man went on and on about how India was already taking over the world and things were going so great, I asked if they were teaching anything to their students to improve the lives of some billion poor people in the country. From then on, the discussion didn’t go very well.

So what can you do to help?

I think making a charitable contribution is the least you can do but more importantly if you are in any way able to influence Indian policies, and have any access at all to Indians who work for US corporations, make it a point that they understand that they wouldn’t create a great country till they take care of their fellow citizens, particularly kids.
