Why online dating should be free?
A lot of our fans at LuvCube and MyNippon had been asking us for making friends with other readers and finding relationships. Since our core competence is content rather than technology, we simply steered these fans away to other dating services like eHarmony or Match.com. In the process, we made some money (not a whole lot) as affiliates. Overall it was bad for us (our fans had to go to another website) and our readers (who were being fleeced each month in huge subscription fees).
After our readers kept pushing us, we decided to investigate our options. To our pleasant surprise we found an excellent open-source program called Dolphin that allows us to operate a completely free online dating website. Indeed, memory and bandwidth will be our expenses but considering how cheap they are these days, we really don’t think we should pass on the cost to our members. And hopefully, we can pay for them through advertising revenue. But more importantly, we are delighted that we can offer a service to our fans at no cost.
