“I want to be a Hilton” for business professionals

As a management consultant, I get to dine in fine restaurants with movers and shakers. But over the years I have seen many successful businesspeople have horrible command of etiquette, what to say of style. All the way from mistreating women to holding their knife in the left hand, I have seen it all. To succeed as a business professional, not only you have to be good at what you do, you also need to have social skills, all the way from charm and compassion to style and etiquette.

While I have been watching some reality television programs (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Queer Eye for the Straight Girl, The Apprentice, America’s Top Model, etc.) primarily because of my current interest in embedded advertising, there are things that you can learn from these programs. It is in this context that I am recommending that you watch “I want to be a Hilton.” I find Kathy Hilton to be stylish, well-mannered, elegant, and someone who knows what she is talking about.

What does it mean for you?

The tips that Kathy Hilton (and her daughters Paris and Nicky) provide are for everyone, not just the contestants. We all can learn something. So put your ego aside and listen.
Take notes, if you need to, and then practice with someone you can trust. Be it a family member or a colleague, you must practice and get feedback. Unless you perfect your manners, you will not get it right. Style develops when it comes naturally and it will not come naturally if you do not make it a part of your life.
Don’t just use these tips when you are in a business setting and forget about them when you are in the privacy of your home. You will commit mistakes, or even worse, completely forget when you most need them.
