First, are you in denial about global warming?

I see the whole global warming issue as a purely strategy issue: What should you do if your business environment changes? One company, on the other hand, is in so much denial that it is focusing its energy on convincing the world that global warming is fiction. Yes, that’s right. ExxonMobil has done everything possible to spread doubts about the solid research that shows that global warming is here. British Weather Service says that 2007 will be the world’s hottest year ever recorded. According to the UN, the world’s ten warmest years have all occurred since 1994.

The Union of Concerned Scientists have some more disturbing news on tactics employed by Exxon Mobil. Their research shows that the company is using the same tactics that cigarette companies used in the past, starting from using the DCI Group to create misleading content for YouTube.

If I were a shareholder of ExxonMobil, I would be very concerned about the priorities of the management. Wrong priorites often means bad strategy and inappropriate allocation of resources. On the contrary, any threat also always creates new growth opportunities: hybrid cars, for example.
