Why I liked The Apartment?

I remember many years ago when one of my friends asked to borrow the key to my apartment to have a rendezvous with his girlfriend but my doorman noticed what happened while I was gone. When I ran into him later, he mentioned it to me that he wanted to make sure that no one intruded into my place and I had let some “guests” in. I never let them (or anyone else) in again when I was not around.
But what if I could have granted that favor to many of my friends? That is how you get “The Apartment” – a movie that I watched as part of my adventures with retro movies (others are Some Like It Hot, Vampyros Lesbos, West Side Story, and The Front Page).
The movie is yet another masterpiece from Jack Lemmon, who is the lead character: C.C. “Bud†Baxter. While he did not think much about what people did and simply enjoyed the promotions and raises that he got in return, things took an interesting turn when when he starts to like Fran Kubelik (played beautifully by Shirley MacLaine) but who is dating his (married) boss Jeff Sheldrake (played by Fred MacMurray).
Watching this movie you will learn that there was a time in our history that it was perfectly acceptable to date your colleagues (even if you supervised them), that many men had flings during the summer when their families escaped to cooler destinations, and that men talked about their adulterous adventures as casually we talk these days about last night’s basketball matches.
